If I had to pick an all time favorite film genre, I would have to go with Film Noir. My love of the ‘hardboiledness’ of the stories aside, the most amazing aspect of these films that captured me as a life long student of film & photography was the aesthetic. Dark, brooding, stylish, strange, sinister…the adjectives describing these visually stunning films could continue for hours.
Taking thousands of photos of my children over the past two years I asked myself, why are most of the shots floating across the flickrsphere almost exclusively smiling happy babies. What about the darker and stranger images from our tots early years? Here are a few of mine:

I was so excited to take Max in the pool for his first time this afternoon that I forgot about that iphone in my front pocket. I guess it’s time to test-drive a droid. Or maybe I should go completely old-school and return to the flip phone.
Anyway you slice it, it was well worth the look on Max’s face as he took his inaugural dive.

Punkrock kid just walked on the redline, bike-locked a shopping cart carrying his amp to the center poll, plugged in and played a Casualties tune LOUD to a packed commute.
Donations were sparse.

The night started with GhostLand Observatory lasers and continued with the FLips entering the stage via a giant video birth canal. From there, Wayne (encased in a giant bubble) crowd-surfed the front rows and the party officially kicked off. Bouncing giant balloons, dancing flowers, white gorillas, and a constantly standing/singing packed house made this one of the best show I’ve ever seen — period. They are touring US & Europe through the balance of the year. Don’t miss it!

I’ve been a photographer now for going on 23 years. I use to call myself a purist and poopoo anything/everything that was not shot on actual film. When I took this shot today it reminded me of what photography is really about, not the process, but about capturing that magical moment in time. Sure, there is value and extreme satisfaction in the mastery of the process (btw — I’m trained in the zone sys, can read a manual light meter, process my own film, etc). But none of it matters unless you capture that magical moment. I took this shot via iPhone and posted on Facebook earlier this afternoon. When I looked at it later this evening, I couldn’t help but admire it far more than many I might have set up with a view camera and light meter. Keep an eye ( or iPhone) open for those magical moments and share them with the rest of us. We can never have too many.

I am a sucker for driver license photos. Sorting through the archives this morning, I ran across this one which I’ve seen today for the first time.
My father (dpb-one) was 39 when this was taken…he died 4 years later of pancreatic cancer.
